Yeah, I know, you are probably reading this post because you have that task to do and you don’t want to do it, and so you are procrastinating again.
You will read it and after having met your daily procrastination dosage you will maybe come back to your job, or maybe not, and you will look for another postponing activity.
Or maybe you are here because you are really intentioned to stop procrastination and finally get over it forever.
In any case I suggest you to continue reading.
What is procrastination?
Procrastination is the act of postponing an activity that needs to get done in favour to a more pleasurable one but that does not necessarily need to get done.
What is it actually?
The art of complicating your life.
So basically, by being human beings, we always try to look for pleasurable activities in our lives and there is nothing bad about that. So if there is a boring activity that needs to get done, why the heck should I do it if I can comfortably lie on the beach taking sun?
I’ll tell you the positive benefits of getting rid of procrastination:
- You will have well spent your day;
- Stress levels will significantly decrease with all the positive health outcomes;
- You’ll be happier;
- You’ll become less prone to procrastinate by procrastinating less;
- You’ll reach more goals;
- You’ll live a more satisfactory life;
- Many more that you will notice.
But how can we really get rid of procrastination? Let’s make a premise before.
I believe that we should let things go sometimes in our life, to experience the magic of it. Anyway I do also think that to go on we need to take control over some aspects of it. This means that we should be able to do the things that we certainly know that need to get done, whatever the circumstances.
Before talking about why you are procrastinating you should have clear in your mind what your target in life is. This is a fundamental aspect to consider. In fact I would divide the main causes of procrastination into these three:
- You don’t like the activity that you have to perform;
- You like the activity but don’t have the energy to engage into it;
- You are busy with more important stuff.
-If the cause of your procrastination is number 3 is fine, as long these comes from a prioritization habit that you are implementing into your life.
-If, instead, the cause comes from the first two points, as it probably is, the solutions are the following:
Solution for the Cause #1:
This is the worst case ever. The fact of having to do something that we don’t want to do creates lots of rigidities and stress in our bodies. The things that you can do in this case are two:
Solution 1: You can delegate someone to do the activity that you don’t want to do.
At this point see if someone is willing to do it for free for you and then you will do something else in return for them or find someone that will do it for something in exchange. Value the Opportunity cost of the thing that you are going to give to this person and estimate if its value is really worth the outsourced activity.
Solution 2: If the activity does not benefit you and you can skip it, just skip it.
As simple as that. Sometimes we think we owe something to someone or that we have to so something because of external circumstances. Anyhow, if the activity is not for you why should you do it? bad word it off.
Solution 3: Start Immediately without thinking about anything else.
If you have to do the activity by yourself 100% and there is no way out from it, the best thing to do is to act now. Yeah Salvo, very simple, thanks for the useless advice. I already knew that.
Wait wait! Here is a trick that works every time. It a method that I invented and it is called the V.A.C.A. method:
Imagine yourself doing the activity with pleasure for around 30 seconds, even if you hate it.
After that say to yourself: “In 5 seconds I am going to… (Activity) ” For example: “In 5 seconds l am going to write the project for my company” Next, being aware of what you said, you start the countdown.
Five, Four, Three, Two, One and when the 0 arrives you move your body and start doing what you have to do.
Summing up, the process is constituted of these 4 items:
- Visualization: You imagine yourself doing the activity;
- Affirmation: You affirm to yourself that you are about to do it;
- Countdown: You start the countdown;
- Action: You move your body and start doing.
Try this method, you will be surprised by the results!
Solution for Cause #2:
Here you should understand if you really like the activity that you are doing or if there is a little uncertainty with it. Are you happy when you do this activities? Do you feel good after having completed them? Do they satisfy you NOW in a way or another?
In this post I will only talk about the latter. We will speak about improving energy levels later on.
In the previous case we worked with the rational mind since the activities were not stimulating us, in this case we will evoke the emotions stemming from doing the activity. These will cause an energy inflow into your body and you will get ready to perform your activity.
But how to evoke these emotions?
Imagine yourself while doing the activity and try to bring all the emotions and sensations associated with that activity into your mind. Think, for example, of the benefits that your soul will receive by performing it. Joy, Energy, Passion, Bliss,Happiness, etc.
If Visualizing does not work, try REMEMBERING yourself why you are doing this activity.
What are the rational benefits that pushed you to do it?
In the case of working out you can start by visualizing yourself more fit, with more muscles, leaner body, more energy, greater social and interpersonal success and great confidence. This is reminding you some reasons that may have pushed you to workout.
For the visualization you can, in this case, thing of what are the sensations that you feel when working out, after working out, when you look at yourself in the mirror or when people compliment you.
The union of these two steps will get you engaged immediately most probably and you will not procrastinate as much as you did before.
So these are some really efficient methods that you can try to reduce your procrastination tendency.
Try it and let us know!
Now I gotta act. See you.
